That's with suricata, squid, few bells and whistles running. With iperf running on the pfsense box I can push close to line speed on the lan side, and get close to about 90% on my wan side. Hardware support on freebsd is pretty limited for a lot of nics we take for granted in linux/windows world. pfsense did not play well with the axis 88179, and i got terrible results until I switched the setup to kvm host and virtio. The broadcom is pci passthrough dedicated for the wan interface, and I use an AXIS 88179 USB3 gigabit adapter for the LAN side as a bridge adapter for virtio. I installed a KVM host OS, and installed pfsense as a vm using seabios and i440 to support virtio nics and storage. Im using an HP 705 G3 with 8GB ram, AMD A10 proc, 128GB ssd, and a single on-board broadcom gigabit adapter. What, in my pfSense box, is the bottleneck? Why would a custom box require a core i7 when their netgate 5100 has an Atom processor? They also stated that really to get something custom built to support gigabit internet is at a minimum a core i7 processor. When I called netgate, they said their minimum requirement to support gigabit internet is this:

Mind you - there is only 1 laptop hardwired into this box. Somewhere in the neighborhood of around 300mbps to at best 700mbps. When connected to my pfSense box, the upload/download speeds are dramatically lower. When my laptop is connected directly to the ATT supplied router/modem, I get very close to 1gbps up and down. Long version: I've been trying to setup a custom pfSense box with 'old parts'. TL DR version: What's the minimum system requirements to comfortably support a gigabit internet connection? r/pfblockerng /r/sysadmin /r/networking /r/homelab /r/homenetworking This is a community subreddit so lets try and keep the discourse polite.
